Last week I did another CPD course with the Sutherland Cranial College. This one was Module 4 - W.G. Sutherland's Approach to the Body as a Whole Using the Principle of Balanced Ligamentous Tension (BLT). I absolutely loved this course. A wonderful group of people - some of whom I haven't seen for ages, Fantastic content and even a panto (for your information, I was the Huntsman!
The course was packed with biomechanics of all the joints in the body and how they interrelate with each other and the other tissues locally and globally throughout the body. We then learnt, via demonstration, how to treat them using Balanced Ligamentous Tension. This is a treatment approach frequently used in cranial osteopathy that I already have some experience in using from my days at the ESO. Here, we take the joint in question to its point of maximum ease in all of its tissues. This is done using fine palpation assessment. At this balance point there is the least resistance and more potency for the reorganisation process to take place. It is a very effective and gentle form of treatment that aims to treat all aspects of a restricted joint - not just the muscle and joint space. This takes into account the joint, muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia fluid and everything. Its brilliant. I feel I have a lot more confidence and ability with this technique and look forward to using it in practice.
On a side note. After this course, I have decided that I want to eventually become a member of the teaching faculty at the SCCO. They are a wonderful group of people and have inspired me so much in the courses I have already done. I will need to do all of the pathway modules first and let it all sink in, so we are looking at several years in the future.
